I love the arts.
The written word, the spoken word.. The sung, musically performed, choreographed, ALL OF IT.
Some plays bore me I admit, but during my Senior Year of high school we went to see this play in Montgomery called "Hats" down at the Shakespeare Theater. It was like a gospel music/ written play. It was really good and I'm glad I had the opportunity to go. I remember when I was a kid I went to see Cats on Broadway at the Von Braun Civic Center. That was a wonderful opportunity that I've never forgotten, even though I only remember the Cats in costume..
When I was in middle school we went to New York City and saw The Lion King on Broadway. It was so amazing!! I really want to take my Mom there one day so she can see it. I've had so many opportunities to experience the arts, and she hasn't had them like I have. One day I'll treat her to what I've had the chance to do all of these years.
So here is my plan during my Break to educate myself in the Arts.
Number One. The Covey Center for the Arts
The Covey Center for the Arts holds several free events during Spring/Summer that I'm interested in. One of which is coming up on May 22-23. Dance Controversy: Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. And you guessed it.. It's about AFRICA. They said there will be tribal drums and everything so count on me getting myself ready to go to it.
Another event is Dance Makers Studio presents the Little Mermaid. The Little Mermaid!!! I love the movie and to bring it to life with dance will be so much fun to watch. They said there's tap and even hip-hop dancing. I wonder how Ariel will look break dancing.. hmmmm... That's coming up on June 5.
Number 2. The Provo Library
There is a poem that I like by Emily Poulsson that talks about books. Let me share it with you.
Books are keys to wisdom’s treasure;
Books are gates to lands of pleasure;
Books are paths that upward lead;
Books are friends. Come, let us read.
--Emilie Poulsson
As you know, the 13th Article of faith said, "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things." Most certainly books are included. In fact, "Seek learning by study and also by faith." "Read out of the best books." Look at all of these words of wisdom telling us to read. Read literature, educate yourselves!
So I've decided that I need to get a Provo Library card. Yes, I have one for the Library on Campus. It is huge and very accessible-BUT don't you ever just want to go to a city library? I remember when I was a kid I used to go to the library all the time and check out books and I'm glad that my parents took the time to take me there. I could spend hours there!
So these are my plans this Spring an Summer.
Some of the books I want to read:
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Catcher in the Rye -- Is this Any Good?
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe -- by Fannie Flagg
Where the Red Fern Grows - by Wilson Rhawls
I think this is enough for right now.. I'll start checking them out after I finish Edgar Allan Poe. I've got 4 months to read whatever I want.
Books finished so far:
The Freedom Writers Diary - I recommend it to anyone who loves stories about diversity and people overcoming their trials. These kids were placed in some of the worst circumstances but they overcame! It gives me hope that if they can face those things, I can face anything and still come out on top. This really encourages me to be a teacher even more. I've always been an advocate for racial tolerance so this was really up my ally to see life in someone else's shoes.
