Dedication leads to Progression

For my Student Development Class (a.k.a. Service Class) we had to read two articles for Monday. Both of them were written by Dallin H. Oaks.

By the way, he's one of my favorite Elders to listen to.
One article in particular stuck out to me and caused me to reflect on how I have demonstrated dedication during my life. Find it here: "The Dedication of a Lifetime"

While reading over the article I started thinking about how we attain worthy goals in life.
It is through dedication. I remember when I first took my flute out of its case in 5th grade. I was hoping to produce this wonderful sound the first day. However, I blew merely a puff of wind and was sorely disappointed. I remember saying that I was horrible, I would never learn to play, and I just couldn't do it. The next week during Band Class, we were TAUGHT how to position our mouths, how to move our fingers, how to produce a sound that could be called music. We can call these simple lessons steps. In order for me to produce a sound, I had to climb the steps that would lead me there. Year after year, I PROGRESSED in my abilities to play the flute. I accomplished things I never thought I could have done. Looking back on that afternoon in fifth grade as I sat in tears, I was not able to see the potential and capabilities I had. Reflecting on that experience, I am so glad that I did not give up on learning an instrument. What would I have learned from quitting? Nothing.

In comparison, exaltation and eternal life can only be achieved as we cross stepping stones. Reaching eternal life requires dedication. It requires small lessons and daily reminders. The gospel of Jesus Christ requires "The Dedication of a Lifetime."

he is one of my favorites too. my favorite comment was a few years back when he told the young girls if they dressed too modestly they were pornography. he hits the nail on the head in plain everyday language every time. he is one of the best. Plus when we left utah this last time i got to see him and his wife in the airport. It was awesome.

Oh yeah, I remember you saying you got to see him. Maybe when I come home for Christmas I'll see President Monson in the airport.
